What Is an Annual Inspection Ferry Flight?

An annual inspection ferry flight is an aircraft repositioning mission arranged specifically to move an airplane to a maintenance facility where its annual inspection will be performed.

A typical mission looks like:

Home Airport → Annual Inspection Facility

Then, after the inspection and required maintenance are completed:

Annual Inspection Facility → Home Airport

Instead of the owner personally:

  1. Flying the airplane to the shop
  2. Finding transportation home
  3. Waiting days or weeks for maintenance
  4. Returning to the shop
  5. Retrieving the airplane
  6. Flying it home

Ferry Flight USA can coordinate qualifying aircraft transportation in either direction—or both.

Why Aircraft Owners Travel for Annual Inspections

The closest mechanic is not always the mechanic you want inspecting your airplane.

Aircraft owners frequently build long-term relationships with:

  • A&P mechanics
  • Inspection Authorization holders
  • Aircraft-specific specialists
  • Manufacturer service centers
  • Independent maintenance shops

You may prefer a particular facility because:

  • They know your aircraft’s history
  • They specialize in your make and model
  • You trust their workmanship
  • They have better availability
  • Their pricing is more competitive
  • They can handle discrepancies discovered during the inspection
  • They maintain other aircraft in your fleet
  • They have specialized equipment or experience

Professional aircraft repositioning means geography does not have to determine who performs your annual inspection.

Choose Your Annual Inspection Facility Based on Expertise

Aircraft maintenance can become highly specialized.

One shop may primarily work on:

  • Piper aircraft

Another may specialize in:

  • Cessna aircraft
  • Beechcraft
  • Mooney
  • Cirrus
  • Aerostar
  • Twin Cessnas
  • Tailwheel aircraft
  • Vintage airplanes
  • Pressurized piston aircraft
  • Experimental aircraft

If the shop that understands your airplane is several airports away, Ferry Flight USA can help get the aircraft there.

What Is an Aircraft Annual Inspection?

For aircraft subject to the annual-inspection requirement, federal regulations generally require an annual inspection within the preceding 12 calendar months before the aircraft may continue normal operation, unless an applicable regulatory exception applies.

An annual inspection is much more than a quick walk-around.

Depending on the aircraft, the inspection can involve evaluation of areas such as:

  • Airframe
  • Engine
  • Propeller
  • Flight controls
  • Landing gear
  • Tires
  • Brakes
  • Fuel system
  • Oil system
  • Exhaust
  • Electrical system
  • Instruments
  • Avionics
  • Required inspections
  • Airworthiness Directive compliance
  • Aircraft maintenance records

The exact scope depends on the aircraft and applicable maintenance requirements.

Who Can Perform an Annual Inspection?

Annual inspections involve specific FAA-authorized maintenance privileges.

A mechanic holding an Inspection Authorization may perform an annual inspection within the scope of that authorization.

The maintenance facility—not Ferry Flight USA—performs and documents the annual inspection.

Our job is the transportation:

Getting the aircraft to the shop and, when it’s ready, helping get it home.

Plan the Ferry Before the Annual Expires

Whenever practical, the easiest approach is to move the aircraft while the current annual inspection is still valid.

For example:

If the aircraft’s annual expires at the end of October and your inspection appointment is October 28, waiting until October 31 to reposition the aircraft leaves very little flexibility.

Potential problems include:

  • Bad weather
  • Pilot availability
  • Shop scheduling
  • Aircraft discrepancies
  • Travel interruptions

Moving the aircraft earlier can avoid unnecessary complications.

Best Practice

If you already know:

  • Where the annual will be performed
  • When the aircraft is due
  • When the shop has availability

start planning the repositioning before the expiration date.

When Does an Annual Inspection Expire?

Annual inspection timing is based on calendar months, not simply 365 days.

For example:

If an aircraft’s annual inspection was completed during October 2025, the annual generally remains current through the end of October 2026 for purposes of the normal annual-inspection requirement.

The actual aircraft records should always be reviewed to establish the applicable inspection status.

What If the Annual Has Already Expired?

This is one of the most important distinctions on this page.

If an aircraft’s required annual inspection has expired, you generally cannot simply say:

“We’re only flying it to the mechanic.”

and operate it as an ordinary flight.

A qualifying aircraft may instead be eligible for an FAA Special Flight Permit, commonly called a ferry permit, to reach a location where the annual inspection can be accomplished.

That is a separate process.

Expired Annual ≠ Automatic Ferry Permit

A Special Flight Permit is not automatic.

The FAA may issue one when an aircraft may not currently meet applicable airworthiness requirements but is capable of safe flight for an approved purpose such as reaching a maintenance facility.

Important distinction:

Regulatory Authorization Does Not Make an Unsafe Aircraft Safe.

The aircraft condition must still support the proposed flight.

If the airplane has serious mechanical, structural or other safety problems, repairs may be required before any flight is appropriate.

FAA FERRY PERMIT GUIDE

Ferry Flight USA & Expired Annuals

If your aircraft’s annual has already expired, tell us immediately when requesting your quote.

Provide:

  • Aircraft make and model
  • N-number
  • Current airport
  • Destination maintenance facility
  • Date the annual expired
  • Known aircraft discrepancies
  • Maintenance contact
  • Insurance requirements

That allows the mission to be evaluated correctly from the beginning.

Annual Inspection vs. 100-Hour Inspection

These requirements should not be confused.

An annual inspection and a 100-hour inspection are not interchangeable in every circumstance.

There is also an important regulatory difference involving movement to an inspection facility.

For certain aircraft subject to the 100-hour requirement, federal regulations permit the 100-hour limitation to be exceeded by up to 10 hours solely while en route to a place where the inspection can be performed, with that excess time counted toward the next 100 hours.

That rule does not create a similar automatic grace period for an expired annual.

If the annual is expired, the aircraft may need a Special Flight Permit before it can be moved.

FERRY PERMIT GUIDE

Annual Inspection Drop-Off Service

Dropping an aircraft off for annual inspection can become an entire travel project.

An owner may need to:

  • Fly several hours to the shop
  • Arrange a ride from the airport
  • Rent a car
  • Buy an airline ticket
  • Ask another pilot to follow in another aircraft
  • Stay overnight
  • Lose a full workday

Ferry Flight USA can handle the aircraft-positioning leg instead.

You stay focused on your business, family or other priorities.

We move the airplane.

Return Delivery After the Annual

When the annual is finished, the transportation problem appears again.

Someone has to retrieve the airplane.

Ferry Flight USA can also coordinate the return flight once the aircraft has been appropriately:

  • Inspected
  • Repaired as required
  • Documented
  • Approved for return to service
  • Prepared for pickup

A typical arrangement can therefore cover:

Outbound

Home Airport → Annual Inspection Facility

Maintenance

Annual Inspection & Repairs

Return

Annual Inspection Facility → Home Airport

Do Not Schedule the Return Pilot Too Early

Annual inspections frequently uncover additional work.

The original estimate may be:

“Three days.”

Then the shop discovers:

  • Tire replacement needed
  • Brake issue
  • Exhaust crack
  • Oil leak
  • Fuel leak
  • Corrosion
  • Magneto issue
  • Engine discrepancy
  • AD compliance issue
  • Landing-gear problem
  • Electrical problem

Suddenly three days becomes ten days.

For that reason, return pilot travel should ideally be coordinated when the maintenance facility can confirm:

“The aircraft is complete and ready for pickup.”

not simply:

“We hope to finish Friday.”

What If the Annual Finds Discrepancies?

Finding discrepancies is one of the purposes of an annual inspection.

Potential findings can include:

  • Tires
  • Brakes
  • Exhaust
  • Engine mounts
  • Oil leaks
  • Fuel leaks
  • Compression issues
  • Corrosion
  • Flight-control issues
  • Landing-gear discrepancies
  • Electrical problems
  • Structural concerns
  • Airworthiness Directive issues

The maintenance facility determines what work must be addressed under the applicable regulations and maintenance requirements.

If the aircraft has not been approved for return to service, a normal return ferry flight should not simply proceed.

What If the Annual Inspection Does Not Pass?

An annual inspection can result in the aircraft not being approved for normal return to service until discrepancies are corrected.

The maintenance records should appropriately document the inspection status.

The owner may then decide to:

  • Complete the repairs at the same facility
  • Obtain parts
  • Bring in a specialist
  • Move the aircraft elsewhere if legally permissible

If the aircraft needs to be moved to another maintenance facility while it does not meet normal airworthiness requirements, a Special Flight Permit may potentially be required.

Moving the Aircraft to Another Shop After an Annual

Suppose your annual inspection discovers:

Major engine work is required.

But the current shop does not perform engine overhauls.

The aircraft may ultimately need to move:

Annual Facility → Engine Shop

Or perhaps:

Annual Facility → Structural Repair Facility

Ferry Flight USA can evaluate qualifying multi-stage maintenance transportation.

Potential routes include:

Home → Annual → Engine Shop → Home

Home → Annual → Avionics Shop → Home

Home → Annual → Paint Shop → Home

Seller → Annual → Buyer

The aircraft’s actual condition and regulatory status control whether each flight can occur normally or requires additional authorization.

Annual Inspection + Engine Work

Owners often use annual downtime to complete engine-related maintenance such as:

  • Cylinder work
  • Magneto service
  • Oil-leak repair
  • Compression troubleshooting
  • Exhaust work
  • Engine accessories
  • Engine replacement
  • Overhaul preparation

If a separate engine facility is required, Ferry Flight USA can potentially coordinate the next positioning leg.

ENGINE SHOP FERRY FLIGHTS

Annual Inspection + Avionics Upgrade

The annual can also be an efficient time for avionics modernization.

Projects may include:

  • GPS
  • Autopilot
  • Glass panel
  • Engine monitor
  • ADS-B
  • Transponder
  • Radios
  • Audio panel

The aircraft could follow a route such as:

Home → Annual Inspection → Avionics Shop → Home

AVIONICS SHOP FERRY FLIGHTS

Annual Inspection + Aircraft Paint

Some owners combine annual inspection downtime with a larger refurbishment project.

For example:

Home → Annual Inspection → Paint Shop → Home

This may be especially useful during:

  • Aircraft restoration
  • Pre-sale refurbishment
  • New ownership upgrades
  • Fleet rebranding

PAINT SHOP FERRY FLIGHTS

Annual Inspection Ferry for Piston Singles

Ferry Flight USA can coordinate qualifying annual-inspection repositioning for piston singles such as:

  • Cessna 150
  • Cessna 152

  • Cessna 182
  • Cessna 206
  • Cessna 210
  • Piper Cherokee
  • Piper Warrior
  • Piper Archer
  • Piper Arrow
  • Piper Saratoga
  • Cirrus SR20
  • Cirrus SR22
  • Beechcraft Bonanza
  • Mooney
  • Diamond
  • Grumman

Piston-twin annual repositioning may require pilots with greater aircraft-specific experience.

Qualifying aircraft can include:

  • Piper Seminole
  • Piper Seneca
  • Piper Apache
  • Piper Aztec
  • Piper Twin Comanche
  • Beechcraft Baron
  • Cessna 310
  • Cessna 340
  • Cessna 414
  • Cessna 421
  • Aerostar
  • Diamond DA42

Pilot matching may consider:

  • Multi-engine time
  • Make/model experience
  • Complex-aircraft experience
  • Pressurization
  • Instrument experience
  • Insurance requirements

PISTON TWIN AIRCRAFT FERRY SERVICES

Tailwheel Aircraft Annual Inspection Ferry

Tailwheel aircraft may require pilots with:

  • Tailwheel endorsement
  • Relevant tailwheel experience
  • Recent experience
  • Make/model familiarity
  • Insurance compatibility

Potential aircraft include:

  • Piper J-3 Cub
  • Piper Super Cub
  • Maule
  • Citabria
  • Decathlon
  • Scout
  • Vintage aircraft

Vintage Aircraft Annual Inspections

Vintage aircraft owners often rely heavily on specialized mechanics.

The nearest general maintenance shop may not have extensive experience with:

  • Fabric aircraft
  • Older Continental engines
  • Older Lycoming engines
  • Tailwheel aircraft
  • Vintage electrical systems
  • Legacy components

Professional ferry service can make a specialist facility much more practical.

Pressurized Aircraft Annual Ferry

Pressurized piston aircraft may require maintenance facilities with additional aircraft-specific knowledge.

Examples can include:

  • Cessna 340
  • Cessna 414
  • Cessna 421
  • Aerostar

Pilot assignment may require:

  • Multi-engine experience
  • Pressurization experience
  • High-altitude experience
  • Make/model time
  • Insurance approval

Experimental Aircraft Condition Inspections

Experimental aircraft are not automatically governed by the same annual-inspection provisions as standard-category aircraft.

Many experimental aircraft operate under requirements involving a condition inspection specified by their operating limitations.

If a condition inspection has expired, movement of the aircraft requires evaluation based on the aircraft’s operating limitations and applicable FAA requirements.

FAA field-office guidance recognizes Special Flight Permits as a possible pathway for qualifying experimental aircraft with expired condition inspections to reach an inspection facility.

Tell Ferry Flight USA the aircraft’s certification category when requesting the mission.

Annual Inspection Ferry for Flight Schools

Flight schools face a special scheduling problem.

Annual inspections already remove aircraft from revenue-producing operations.

Using an instructor to transport the aircraft can also remove a CFI from:

  • Flight lessons
  • Checkride preparation
  • Discovery flights
  • Student scheduling

Ferry Flight USA can coordinate qualifying annual repositioning so instructors remain focused on training.

Keep Your CFIs Teaching.

FLIGHT SCHOOL FLEET REPOSITIONING

Flying Clubs & Annual Inspection Repositioning

Flying clubs may have a preferred IA or maintenance facility away from their home field.

Instead of asking:

  • Club officers
  • CFIs
  • Volunteer members

to devote an entire day to dropping off or retrieving the aircraft, Ferry Flight USA can coordinate the repositioning.

This becomes especially useful in larger fleets where annuals occur throughout the year.

Aircraft Management Companies

Aircraft management companies may coordinate maintenance across multiple aircraft and bases.

Annual-inspection ferry service can support:

  • Remote aircraft
  • Managed fleets
  • Seasonal aircraft
  • Maintenance-center positioning
  • Aircraft acquisitions

That helps internal crews remain available for their normal responsibilities.

Aircraft Dealers & Annual Inspections

Dealers may need aircraft repositioned for annual inspection:

  • Before listing
  • Before retail delivery
  • After accepting a trade
  • During inventory refurbishment
  • Before buyer closing

A dealer may also prefer to use a particular shop that understands its inventory.

AIRCRAFT DEALER FERRY SERVICES

Aircraft Brokers & Annual Inspections

Aircraft brokers may encounter transactions in which:

  • Annual is approaching expiration
  • Annual has expired
  • Buyer requests a fresh annual
  • Pre-buy discovers discrepancies
  • Seller agrees to corrective maintenance

Potential mission:

Seller → Annual Inspection Facility → Buyer

Ferry Flight USA can coordinate qualifying transportation while the transaction parties manage the purchase and maintenance decisions.

AIRCRAFT BROKER FERRY SERVICES

Newly Purchased Aircraft & Annual Inspection

Aircraft buyers sometimes purchase airplanes that are:

  • Near annual
  • Just coming out of annual
  • Due shortly after closing

Instead of:

Seller → Buyer

the delivery can potentially become:

Seller → Annual Facility → Buyer

This can allow the new owner to begin ownership with the aircraft inspected at the maintenance provider they selected.

NEWLY PURCHASED AIRCRAFT DELIVERY

Annual Inspection Ferry Before an Aircraft Sale

Sellers may also choose to complete a fresh annual before listing or closing.

Potential benefits can include:

  • Current inspection status
  • Opportunity to correct discrepancies
  • Reduced uncertainty
  • Improved buyer confidence

Ferry Flight USA can help move the airplane to the owner’s chosen inspection facility.

Annual Inspection Ferry Planning

Moving an aircraft to an annual inspection facility still requires normal professional ferry planning.

The pilot may consider:

  • Aircraft condition
  • Inspection status
  • Weather
  • Fuel
  • Aircraft range
  • Terrain
  • Airspace
  • Airport suitability
  • Daylight
  • Alternative airports

FERRY FLIGHT PLANNING

Weather & Annual Inspection Ferry Flights

Annual appointments do not control the weather.

The pilot may need to:

  • Delay
  • Depart earlier
  • Change route
  • Stop overnight
  • Wait for better conditions

If the aircraft’s annual is approaching expiration, poor weather can create additional scheduling pressure.

That is another reason to avoid planning the repositioning at the last possible moment.

WEATHER & FERRY FLIGHTS

Insurance Requirements

Aircraft insurance can affect pilot assignment even for a simple maintenance repositioning flight.

Potential requirements may include:

  • Total time
  • PIC time
  • Make/model experience
  • Retractable-gear experience
  • Multi-engine time
  • Tailwheel experience
  • Pressurization experience
  • Turbine experience
  • Named-pilot approval

If the aircraft is operating under a Special Flight Permit, the insurer may also need to be informed depending on the policy.

AIRCRAFT INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

AIRCRAFT PRE-DELIVERY CHECKLIST

Preparing the Aircraft for Return Delivery

Before scheduling the return pilot:

☐ Annual inspection completed

☐ Maintenance discrepancies appropriately addressed

☐ Aircraft approved for return to service as applicable

☐ Required maintenance entries completed

☐ Aircraft reassembled

☐ Ground runs/checks completed where required

☐ No unresolved discrepancy prevents the planned flight

☐ Keys available

☐ Fuel status known

☐ Pickup contact confirmed

☐ Destination parking arranged

A pilot should not travel simply because:

“The inspection is finished.”

The aircraft needs to be ready to leave.

Post-Maintenance Operational Checks

Certain maintenance performed during an annual can affect aircraft flight characteristics or substantially affect its operation.

In some circumstances, federal regulations require an operational check by an appropriately rated pilot before carrying people other than required crewmembers.

That requirement is separate from the normal transportation mission.

If the maintenance facility says a maintenance-related operational check is required, clarify who is responsible for that flight before scheduling the return ferry.

Ferry Pilot vs. Maintenance Test Pilot

These roles should not automatically be treated as identical.

The standard Ferry Flight USA mission is:

Aircraft Transportation

It does not automatically include:

  • Maintenance test flying
  • Aircraft certification
  • Maintenance approval
  • Return-to-service authority

If a separate post-maintenance operational or test flight is required, that should be identified and arranged appropriately.

Ferry Services for Annual Inspection Shops

Ferry Flight USA can also work directly with maintenance facilities and IAs.

Your customers may want to use your shop but be located hundreds of miles away.

Instead of telling them:

“You’ll have to figure out how to get the airplane here,”

your business can offer an aircraft-transportation solution.

Customer Airport → Your Maintenance Facility → Customer Airport

Ferry Flight USA can coordinate qualifying pickup and return delivery.

Annual Inspection Ferry FAQ

Can Ferry Flight USA deliver my aircraft to an annual inspection?

Yes. Ferry Flight USA coordinates qualifying aircraft repositioning flights to A&P mechanics, IAs and maintenance facilities throughout the United States.

Can you bring the aircraft home after the annual?

Yes. Once the aircraft is properly ready and approved for return to service as applicable, return delivery can be coordinated.

Can I fly an aircraft to annual after the annual has expired?

An aircraft subject to the normal annual requirement generally cannot simply continue ordinary operation after the annual has expired. A qualifying aircraft may be eligible for an FAA Special Flight Permit to reach an inspection facility.

Is there a grace period after an annual expires?

Do not confuse the annual requirement with the separate 100-hour inspection provision. The regulations provide a limited en-route allowance for certain 100-hour inspections, but that is not a general grace period for an expired annual.

Can Ferry Flight USA help with a ferry permit?

Ferry Flight USA can coordinate the operational ferry mission, but the FAA determines whether a Special Flight Permit is issued.

Does a ferry permit mean the aircraft is airworthy?

No. A Special Flight Permit can authorize a qualifying aircraft that may not meet all normal airworthiness requirements to make a specific flight when the aircraft is capable of safe flight and the FAA requirements are satisfied.

Who performs the annual inspection?

The annual inspection is performed by appropriately authorized maintenance personnel. Ferry Flight USA provides aircraft transportation, not the annual inspection itself.

Can an ordinary A&P sign off an annual inspection?

Annual-inspection privileges are governed by FAA regulations. A mechanic exercising Inspection Authorization privileges can perform an annual within the scope of that authorization.

Can you ferry piston singles for annuals?

Yes. Qualifying piston-single annual-inspection missions can be coordinated nationwide.

Can you ferry piston twins?

Yes. Qualifying twins can be assigned to appropriately rated and experienced pilots.

Can you ferry tailwheel aircraft to annual inspections?

Potentially. Tailwheel missions require appropriately qualified pilots and must satisfy applicable insurance requirements.

Can you move experimental aircraft for condition inspections?

Potentially. Experimental aircraft operate under their applicable operating limitations and certification requirements, so the exact aircraft must be evaluated individually.

Can you ferry the aircraft if the annual finds another mechanical problem?

Possibly, but only if the aircraft is legally and operationally appropriate for the next flight. Additional maintenance or a Special Flight Permit may be required.

Can you move the aircraft from the annual shop to an engine shop?

Yes, qualifying multi-stage maintenance missions can be evaluated.

Can you move it from annual to an avionics shop?

Yes.

Can you move it from annual to a paint shop?

Yes.

Can you transport flight-school aircraft for annuals?

Yes. Ferry Flight USA can coordinate qualifying fleet-repositioning missions so instructors can remain focused on training.

Can maintenance shops arrange Ferry Flight USA for customers?

Yes. Maintenance facilities can discuss recurring aircraft pickup and return-delivery relationships with Ferry Flight USA.

How far will Ferry Flight USA move an aircraft for an annual?

Qualifying missions can range from short regional repositioning flights to long-distance aircraft delivery across the United States.

How much does annual inspection ferry service cost?

Cost depends on the aircraft, distance, pilot requirements, travel expenses, number of pilot days and mission complexity.

Ferry Flight USA

Annual Inspection Ferry • Maintenance Repositioning • Aircraft Pickup & Return Delivery • Nationwide Service

Ferry Flight USA provides aircraft ferry and repositioning coordination and does not perform annual inspections or determine aircraft airworthiness through the ferry service. Aircraft owners, operators and appropriately authorized maintenance personnel remain responsible for inspection status, maintenance requirements and return-to-service determinations. The FAA determines Special Flight Permit eligibility and operating limitations. Mission acceptance remains subject to aircraft condition, applicable regulations, pilot qualifications, insurance requirements, weather, crew availability and mission requirements.
